Surf Trip Packing List: Going on a surf trip and not sure what to pack? We can help you!
Updated: Sep 17
Are you ready to catch some gnarly waves and embark on that dream surf adventure?
Packing for a surf trip can be both exciting and overwhelming, so much that you can forget to pack all you need before heading out the door!
But don't worry! We've got you covered with a packing list to ensure you have everything you need for an unforgettable surf trip. Let's dive in!
Gear Up for the Surf:
1. Surfboard and fins
Your trusty companions for riding those epic waves!
I always like to pack more than one surfboard for any surf trip as if one gets a ding or gets broken you always have the other one ready to surf while the other is getting fixed.
I also like to bring 2 different surfboards, usually one for the daily surfs and a step-up surfboard for the bigger days, but this combination can be of any type you like, and also, adjust the surfboards to the spot and waves you are going to surf.
The same for the fins, bring a few spare ones for different types of waves and, also, in case you lose or break one.
Don't forget to pack your surfboard in a quality padded travel bag to keep it safe during transit.
2. Wetsuit for cold water and boardshorts for the tropics
If you are going to surf in cold water, protect yourself from the chilly waters with a high-quality wetsuit that fits you perfectly. Remember, comfort and flexibility are key when choosing the right wetsuit.
If you are going to go surfing in Portugal, for instance, you should probably pack a good 4/3 in winter or summer as the water is always cold.
Personally, in Portugal, I use a 5/4 in winter or when I'm teaching people how to surf, but, for some people, a 5/4 is too much. Well, I like to stay toasty in winter!
If you are going to surf in warm water then bring your favorite board shorts or bikini but also don't forget to pack a slim neoprene shirt or jacket (usually between 1mm to 2mm thick) for the chiller days.
I usually bring a 2mm neoprene jacket to Indonesia for the chillier days and the rest of the days I wear board shorts and a t-shirt to protect myself from the sun.
3. Leash
It's always a good measure to bring spare leashes when traveling because leashes sometimes break and you might not have a shop nearby to buy the type of leashes you like or a store might not even exist at your destination.
You want to keep yourself and the surfboard safe, especially when traveling to remote places, so another thing you should do, is to inspect your used leashes to make sure they are still ok or to just buy new ones at your local store before going on the trip.
4. Wax
Ensure optimal traction on your surfboard by packing wax suitable for the water temperature of your destination.
You can always find the temperature that the wax was made for on the box or cover that the wax comes in when you buy it. If you don't know how to check, then, ask the store and tell them where you are traveling to.
Don't forget to get wax for the base layer if you are going to replace all the wax on your surfboard.

Essential Travel Items:
1. Travel Documents
Don't forget your passport, travel insurance, and any necessary visas.
Also, you might consider getting an international driver's license if you are planning to drive abroad.
It's always a good idea to keep these documents with you but stored safely.
2. Sunscreen
Protect your skin from the sun's harsh rays with a water-resistant sunscreen. Opt for a reef-safe formula to preserve the ocean ecosystem.
3. Surf Travel Guide
Enhance your surf trip experience by packing a surf travel guide with insider tips on the best surf spots, accommodations, and local eateries. If you can't find one then you can ask a local guide.
4. First Aid Kit
Be prepared for any minor injuries with a compact first aid kit that includes essentials like bandages, antibacterial ointment, and pain relievers.
5. Health and travel insurance
It's always a good measure to get health insurance that is valid in your destination.
You can easily find health insurance for traveler surfers by searching online or by asking your insurance dealer to get you one.
